About Janet Altmann

Janet Altmann , BSc, PgDip, MSc., joined Mary Byrne’s team in December 2019. 

Janet qualified in 1996 through the Stellenbosch University with a “Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy”. After working in a Cape Town private hospital for a couple of years,  Janet moved on to the UK where she enjoyed working in both orthopedic and internal medicine NHS settings. Janet then moved across the globe to join the rehabilitation team of a multidisciplinary medical clinic in Christchurch, New Zealand. During this time Janet also travelled with the Canterbury provincial netball  as team physiotherapist and qualified with a  “Post Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy” through the “Auckland University of Technology”.

On return to South Africa in 2007, Janet worked for a year at the “UCT Sports Science Institute of South Africa” , following which she opened her own private practice in Plumstead, Cape Town.

While practicing part-time, Janet held a part-time lecturing position at the Stellenbosch University Physiotherapy division, lecturing on the under– and postgraduate programs. In line with her special interest in shoulders, Janet completed a “Masters of Science in Physiotherapy”, by thesis in 2010.  Her thesis investigated neck and shoulder pain in nurses.

Janet has a wide scope of experience in treating orthopaedic, sports and neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. She has a passion to empower patients to help themselves. When treating a patient, she draws from her experience of her past participation in competitive road cycling, mountain biking, duathlon, road and cross country running races, as well as her formative grounding as a ballet dancer to an advanced level.
